Dear Stylist,
"Do I really need to wear sunscreen on my scalp? Every time I head to the beach my scalp gets red but I hate wearing sunscreen. I'm afraid I will look greasy or it'll damage my color...What do I do?"
Dear Reader,
Every time we go out into the sun we are told to wear sunscreen to protect our skin from the harmful sun rays. It has been proven how powerful the sun is and the damage it can do. So how come we slather it all over our bodies but never apply it to our scalp? Your scalp is the highest part of your body exposed to the sun. It doesn’t matter how much hair you have, your scalp will still get sun burned. Applying sunscreen to your scalp not only protects your skin but it helps protect your hair as well.
At Color Me Studio in Northfield NJ, our stylists are available to help all clients with their healthy hair goals. The next time you're at the salon for a root touch up, full highlight, or even scalp therapy, ask us for advice!
The sun can cause serious damage to your hair. It can cause color fading, dry hair, and split ends. Excessive sun damage will strip your hair of its natural keratin and can cause it to become frizzy and unmanageable. Another downside to not applying sunscreen to your scalp is that if your scalp gets burned, it can damage the hair follicles causing temporary hair loss in the area that is sunburned.
We always recommend using salon quality products to keep your hair healthy and hydrated. We are the only Davines retailer in the Northfield area. Try Davines Minu, on sale for the month of July 2024 at 20% off.
Yes, you can use regular body sunscreen on your scalp. Though there are many sunscreens available that are specifically formulated to protect your hair and scalp from environmental factors. You can use a scalp targeting mist such as COOLA Scalp & Hair Mist Organic Sunscreen or RHRI Scalp and Hair Mineral Sunscreen Spray all over to make sure you get between all of the hairs. If you are going to the beach or pool you can wear your hair in braids and spray a UV protection spray on your part, such as SU Hair Milk. Or if you are going out and don’t want your hair to be greasy you can opt for a powdered sunscreen such as Supergoop! Poof 100% Mineral Part Powder or Colorescience Brush-On Sunscreen Mineral Powder. These act as a dry shampoo that also helps protect your skin, so no need to worry about having slick looking hair. Whichever option you choose is better than not wearing sunscreen at all.
If you still want protection but don't want to wear sunscreen you can wear a scarf or bandana to the beach! That will help protect your scalp and hair from the sun, and it's also a cute accessory to any beachy outfit.
The biggest tip to focus on is making sure you apply sunscreen regularly and in the most exposed areas or keep your head covered. For example your hairline and your part are the most at risk for sunburn. Taking caution and preventing your hair from sun damage will help you keep your hair healthy, shiny, and manageable. So the next time you are about to go out in the sun, make sure to grab a head covering or apply sunscreen to your scalp as well as your body!
